What is an Aranmula Kannadi?
An Aranmula Kannadi is a hand-made metal mirror from Aranmula, in Kerala's Pathanamthitta district. Instead of glass, it uses a polished surface of copper and tin alloy, so the reflection comes directly from the metal. The craft holds Geographical Indication (GI) status, and in Kerala the mirror is treasured as an auspicious gift for weddings, housewarmings and Vishu.
Styles in this collection
- Valkannadi: the traditional hand mirror.
- Shangu and Kingini Shangu: frames inspired by the conch.
- Peedam: pedestal-inspired designs such as Krishna Peedam and Shangu Peedam.
- Ashtamangalyam: a design representing eightfold auspiciousness.
Caring for your mirror
The polished metal surface marks easily. Hold it by the frame, wipe it only with a soft dry cloth, and keep it in its box when not on display.
