About Balaramapuram handlooms

Balaramapuram, near Thiruvananthapuram, is one of Kerala's best-known handloom centres. Its weavers make fine cotton kaithari (handloom) cloth, often finished with a kasavu (zari) border, and Balaramapuram saris and fine cotton fabrics carry a Geographical Indication (GI) registration.

This collection has 43 pieces: mundu for everyday and festive wear, handloom sarees, and set mundu and pudavas.

Choosing your handloom

  • Border: listings name the border colour and width, such as gold kasavu, silver or copper, in sizes such as 1/2 inch or 1 inch.
  • Occasion: kasavu mundu and set mundu are traditional wear for Onam, Vishu, weddings and temple visits.
  • Care: handloom cotton and zari last longer with gentle hand washing and shade drying.
