Aranmula Kannadi – Vallam (Boat) metal frame

The origins of the Aranmula kannadi ( Valkannadi ) are often traced to the well-known Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple. Several centuries ago, eight families of experts in temple arts and crafts came to Aranmula from Tirunelveli in Tamil nadu at the behest of the King of Pandalam. They were assigned the task of undertaking work in the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple. While working with bronze to make a crown for Lord Parthasarathy, the presiding deity of the temple, they unexpectedly came across a unique reflective property of an alloy consisting of copper and tin. Later, the craftsmen tried various compositions, which ultimately led to the standards of making the metal mirror.

What makes this mirror so special?

Aranmula Kannadi, Kerala’s authentic metal craft, is regarded as a metallurgical wonder. Interestingly, the technical knowledge behind the making of this extraordinary metal mirror is a closely guarded secret. It is known only to certain households in Aranmula.

How is it made?

The unique Aranmula Kannadi is made using a special alloy comprising a combination of copper and tin with trace elements.  To achieve the desired reflective surface, intensive polishing sessions are required. Even today, these master craftsmen use indigenous methods and materials to produce these exquisite metal-alloy mirrors. Needless to say, It takes tremendous practice, concentration and patience to produce a fine mirror.

  1. Amazing! Is this mirror original?

Yes, of course. It’s 100% original. It reflects the images clearly. In a normal mirror, the image is formed from the inner surface. However, in Aranmula Kannadi, light gets reflected from the outer surface (i.e., polished metal surface) which gives the perfect image.

  1. Is the mirror expensive?

Yes, the mirror is highly expensive because of the  considerable manual effort involved in its making.

  1.  Is this product custom-made? Is it available in bulk quantity?

The mirror is made-to-order and the price may vary from Rs 800 to Rs 100,000 depending on its size. You can select the size of the mirror and the frame designs made in brass. Please provide us the details during the time of order.
