A houseboat (Kettuvallam) is a boat designed as a floating house with all amenities and which is widely used in the backwaters of Kerala. Houseboats have thatched roof covers over wooden hulls. These were formerly used to carry rice and spices from Kuttanad to the Kochiport. Houseboats were considered a convenient and low-cost means of transportation. Gradually these were inducted into the tourism industry. Now the backwaters of Kerala with the houseboats is one of the most sought after destinations of tourists.
