Ganapathi
Ganesha, The God of beginnings
Ganesha or Ganapati is one of the prominent deities in the Hindu pantheon. According to Hindu mythology, Ganesha, the elephant-headed God, is the son of Shiva and Parvati and the brother of Karthikeya or Subrahmanya, the God of war. Widely worshipped by Hindus, Ganesha is regarded as the God of beginnings, remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the God of intellect and wisdom. The chant Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha is recited to invoke Ganesha at the beginning of a new venture, a journey, or a new year to clear the potential difficulties and to usher in prosperity and success.
Ganesha in Indian Art
A popular figure in Indian art, Ganesha is often portrayed as standing, dancing, fighting the demons, playing with his family as a boy, sitting down, or represented in varied other situations. His most striking and recognizable feature is his elephant head. He is generally depicted with a pot-belly, symbolizing the existence of all the universes of the past, present, and future inside him. Ganesha is often portrayed with four arms; his lower right hand holding his broken tusk and his lower-left hand holding a bowl of delicacies or modakapātra, which he samples with his trunk. His upper hands carry an axe and a noose that represent his ability to remove or cut through obstacles. The colors generally associated with Ganesha are red and yellow.
