Elephantine spectacles: Elephant pageantry and festivals of Kerala
Elephant pageantry is a significant part of the festivals of Kerala. Elephant processions are a spectacular feature of some of the biggest cultural events in Kerala such as the Thrissur Pooram, Arattupuzha Pooram. Parippally Gajamela. Pariyanampetta Pooram and Uthralikkavu Pooram. These majestic pachyderms are considered auspicious and hence they carry the deity during the festival processions and ritual worship in the Hindu temples. Interestingly, the famous Guruvayur temple owns more than 60 elephants. The temple elephants decked up in gold plated caparisons (Nettippattam), bells and necklaces; the beautiful silk parasols (Muttukuda); swaying white tufts (Venchamaram); and peacock feather fans (Alavattam) coupled with the spellbinding percussion music are truly a sight to behold.
