Vallamkali, the traditional boat race of Kerala

Chundan Vallam or snake boat is a unique canoe-style wooden boat used in Vallamkali, the ceremonial boat race of Kerala. Awe-inspiring and magnificent, Vallamkali is one of the world’s most fascinating sports events. In this age-old tradition, boatmen dressed in distinctive Kerala style paddle synchronously to the rhythms of the “vanchippattu” (boat race song), leading the boats to the finishing point.  The Chundan Vallam is a remarkable example of ancient Kerala’s prowess in naval architecture.

There are numerous legends, folklores and myths associated with the boat races of Kerala. The season of boat races begins during Onam. Several major and minor boat races are held in and around Alappuzha, the boat race hub of Kerala. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alappuzha and Aranmula Uthritthathi Boat Race in Pattanamthitta are the two major boat races in Kerala.
