Respiratory diseases

Respiratory diseases are one of the most common medical conditions in the world. Lung diseases are often caused by infection, smoking tobacco, breathing in second-hand tobacco smoke, radon, asbestos, or due to other forms of air pollution.

Respiratory diseases can be both short-term as well as chronic. The most common ones are: ·

Tuberculosis, Pneumonia,  Emphysema, Cystic Fibrosis,  Common Cold, Cancer,  Asthma, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Few Ayurvedic tips for healthy lungs and improved breathing

According to Ayurveda, Vata governs the respiratory system. An imbalance in the functioning of any of the Doshas (Kapha, Pitta or Vata) in an individual’s body could result in the accumulation of toxins or impurities (Ama) in the respiratory channels, which further leads to the build-up of mucous and blockages in lung tissues. Ayurveda uses a specialized therapeutic procedure known as Panchakarma, which helps to eliminate the toxins, thus ensuring the physical well-being of the patient. A dosha-balancing diet, stress relieving techniques and immunity boosting medications are generally recommended to supplement this procedure.

  • Eating the right food plays a significant role in strengthening the lungs. Ayurveda recommends herbs such as Cardamom, Eucalyptus, Licorice, Pippali and Holy basil to be included in your diet, which  aids respiratory functions in your body.
  • Practicing pranayamaor breathing exercise for 15-20 mins a day will help you breathe easier, power up your lungs and clear the airways.  It also helps in calming the mind.
  • Drink lots of water to improve blood flow. It also keeps you hydrated.
  • Garlic or onion will help to reduce cholesterol and ward off infections that affect the lungs
  • Consume citrus fruits regularly as they are rich in Vitamin C.
  • Drink a glass of warm milk mixed with turmeric every night. It helps to prevent infections and lung diseases and keeps cold at bay.
