Balaramapuram Handloom (Kaithari) with its intricate craftsmanship and elegant design stands tall among hand-spun clothes. The traditional handloom industry, which survived in Balaramapuram, a small town in the Thiruvananthapuram district for centuries/generations, currently faces severe problems. Historically it originated in ‘Shali Gothra Theruvu’ where the weaving community was entrusted with making clothes for the erstwhile Royal family about 300 years ago. Over the years, the traditional ‘kuzhi thari’ gave way to the present ‘shuttle thari’.
